Identification of gifted learners
Candidates use the results of assessments to identify gifted and talented learners.
7.1: Identify
and use non-biased and equitable approaches for identifying gifted and talented
learners.
1. The article, "Making All Kids Smarter" discusses how gifted kids have been identified in the past, the three P's of gifted identification (Potential, Personality, Performance), and the five areas of gifted identification. This article helped me be more aware of how gifted students are identified and how giftedness is defined.
2. Teaching for High Potential (Fall 2012) includes an article titled, "Clearing a Path to Achievement for Low-Income, High-Ability Learners." This article explores the topic of how we can identify and include more low-income, high-ability learners in our gifted classrooms/programs.
7.2: Identify
and use technically adequate qualitative and quantitative assessments for
identifying and placing gifted and talented learners.
1. My final project for the course, "Gifted and the Law" describes measures that are used to identify gifted students in the Issaquah School District. The use of IQ tests, teacher recommendations, and writing samples are all used to identify gifted students, starting in 2nd grade.
7.3: Explain
uses, limitations, and interpretation of multiple assessments in different
domains for identifying individuals with exceptional learning needs.
1. The article "Gifted Underachievers" explores the lack of identification of gifted students who come from low-income families or are English Language Learners. This article also discusses the impact that under-identification has on these children; including underachievement, behavior problems, and dropping out due to boredom. This article demonstrates my understanding of the importance of identifying all gifted learners, no matter what their background is.
7.4: Implement processes and procedures for the identification of gifted and talented learners.
1. Post #7 from the course, "Nature and Needs of Gifted Learners," explores my design for an identification plan that addresses under-represented populations of gifted students. This demonstrates my ability to apply my knowledge from multiple courses and research to the development of an identification plan.
